About the Association
Four decades of bringing industry, labor, education, and government together in one room for a single purpose: safer mines.
A Legacy That Started in 1983
The South Central Joint Mine Health & Safety Conference began in 1983 as a partnership between the U.S. Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), state mine safety and health educational institutions and agencies, and the mining industry. It was the first regional industry/MSHA partnership conference of its kind in America, and the word "joint" in our name still describes exactly how we work.
While the conference formally serves the Midwest and Southwest regions, mining professionals from across the country are welcome and attend every year.
From University Program to Independent Nonprofit
For roughly 32 years the conference was supported by the University of Texas at Austin's Health and Training Center through federal grants. In 2014, when federal budget constraints reduced that support, longtime conference members stepped up and established the independent SCJMHSC Association as a Texas-based nonprofit so the tradition could continue uninterrupted.
Today the Association is led by an elected Board of Directors who serve without compensation, with guidance from a volunteer Planning Committee that represents a broad cross-section of the mining industry.
